Community sports champions from Hazel Grove constituency were honoured at a Downing Street reception thanks to the Conservative candidate for the constituency.
Paul Athans was so impressed by the voluntary work of Andy Lord and Philip Wright that he put them forward to visit Downing Street at the recent ‘bringing communities together through sport’ reception at No 10.
Andy supports a local charity that provides trainers to disadvantaged teenagers and young adults who might not be able to afford them and aims ‘to nurture young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and help them reach their full potential.’
As well as Andy, Philip Wright also joined Paul in Downing Street. Philip has been involved with Rose Hill Junior Football Club for over 20 years. He went from one of the team coaches to Chairman and supported the club during some difficult seasons.
The club currently has 18 competing teams across several age categories. and was founded in the early 1990s to give boys and girls a chance to play football locally.
Commenting on the reception and the voluntary work of all those who attended, Paul said:
“Grassroots sport brings communities together and helps keep us fit and healthy both physically and mentally.
“I was overjoyed to be able to invite two local champions to No10 Downing Street to thank them personally for all they do for our area.”
Echoing his words, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Rt Hon Lucy Frazer KC MP said:
“Sport is for everyone. It enriches our communities and improves lives right across the country. Andy and Philip are dedicated champions of community sport in Hazel Grove constituency, and it was a real pleasure to celebrate their work alongside Paul Athans.”
